Các nhà vi sinh vật học phát hiện nhiều điểm giống nhau giữa đàn vi khuẩn và bức tranh nổi tiếng khi nghiên cứu về hành vi hợp tác của vi khuẩn ăn thịt mang tên Myxococcus xanthus. Những cá thể thuộc loài này được biết tới bởi khả năng hình thành đàn hợp tác, cùng chia sẻ nguồn tài nguyên để áp đảo con mồi. Nhóm nghiên cứu đặc biệt chú ý tới cặp protein TraA và TraB, cho phép vi khuẩn nhận biết và liên kết với nhau.
