Hiện nay, vùng trung tâm Australia là sa mạc, nhưng nơi đây từng là một biển nước mặn thời xa xưa. Thành hệ Browne có nhiều đặc trưng riêng, bao gồm lớp đá muối trải rộng. Sử dụng mẫu vật lõi thành hệ Browne do Cục Khảo sát Địa chất Tây Australia thu thập năm 1997, nhà địa chất học Sara Schreder-Gomes và cộng sự tiến hành nghiên cứu đá muối bằng phương pháp quang học không xâm lấn, giúp đá muối nguyên vẹn. Điều đó có nghĩa bất kỳ thứ gì tồn tại bên trong viên đá phải mắc kẹt vào thời điểm tinh thể hình thành.
