Hiện tượng đột biến trong một gene giúp con người phát triển tiếng nói và ngôn ngữ.Giới khoa học chưa tìm ra bất kỳ lời giải thích nào về khả năng phát triển ngôn ngữ của loài người trên phương diện di truyền. Nhưng BBC cho biết, vào năm 1990, các chuyên gia tại Mỹ nghiên cứu một gia đình mắc bệnh rối loạn ngôn ngữ và phát hiện ra rằng gene FOXP2 của họ bị đột biến. Từ đó tới nay người ta tiếp tục tìm thấy phiên bản đột biến của FOXP2 trong nhiều loài động vật có xương sống.
