Ngô biến đổi gene tự tiêu diệt sâu
nh minh họa cây ngô của iastate.edu.Bằng cách cấy thêm gene, các nhà khoa học Thuỵ Sỹ vừa tạo ra loại ngô có khả năng tiết ra hoá chất để diệt sâu khi chúng gặm rễ.Khi bị sâu ăn rễ (ấu trùng của bọ cánh cứng) tấn công, rễ của ngô biến đổi gene giải phóng một hợp chất ở dạng khí ra môi trường xung quanh. Khi tiếp xúc với chất khí này, lũ sâu sẽ rơi vào tình trạng mệt mỏi. Theo quy luật tự nhiên chúng sẽ bước vào giai đoạn thành trùng dù chưa đến thời điểm thích hợp. Hậu quả là lũ sâu sẽ chết.
