Trong nỗ lực giảm lượng khí thải nhà kính, các nhà sản xuất máy bay đã đạt bước tiến xa khi sử dụng nhiên liệu sinh học để vận hành động cơ máy bay, và chuyến bay đầu tiên sử dụng nhiên liệu “thân thiện” đã cất cánh thành công. Chiếc Boeing 747 của hãng KLM Royal Dutch Airline được sử dụng nhiên liện bán sinh họcĐó là chuyến bay của hãng hàng không Hoàng gia Hà Lan, KLM Royal Dutch Airline, với 40 hành khách trên chiếc Boeing 747, bay vòng quanh Thụy Sỹ trong một giờ.
