Sao Thủy được bao phủ bởi graphite, một dạng carbon nguyên chất có thể biến đổi thành kim cương sau các vụ va chạm với thiên thạch, tiểu hành tinh và sao chổi. Giới nghiên cứu đã biết sao Thủy chịu tác động nặng nề từ cuối trận mưa bom lớn (Late Heavy Bombardment), thời kỳ sơ khai của hệ Mặt Trời cách đây 4,1 - 3,8 tỷ năm khi phần lớn miệng hố trên Mặt Trăng hình thành. Tuy nhiên, sao Thủy có nhiều miệng hố hơn hẳn Mặt Trăng, dẫn tới nhiều vụ va chạm tạo ra kim cương hơn.
