ác nhà khoa học phát hiện ra rằng lực hút của mặt trời và mặt trăng đối với địa cầu có thể gây nên những chấn động dưới lòng đất.Đường phay (hay đường đứt gãy) San Andreas là ranh giới tự nhiên giữa Thái Bình Dương và các mảng kiến tạo địa tầng Bắc Mỹ. Với chiều dài 1.280 km, nó chạy từ phía nam sa mạc thuộc bang California, Mỹ tới phía bắc bang này. Đường phay San Andreas từng tạo nên trận động đất khủng khiếp tại thành phố San Francisco vào năm 1906 khiến hơn 3.000 người thiệt mạng.
