Tuy nhiên, chuyến bay của tàu Chandrayaan-1 (Ấn Độ) và vụ nã tên lửa xuống mặt trăng vào năm ngoái của Mỹ đã chứng minh đây là suy nghĩ sai lầm. Chandrayaan-1 phát hiện 40 hố trên mặt trăng chứa nước đóng băng ở độ sâu khoảng 2 m so với bề mặt.
