Ảnh: NASA.New Scientist cho biết, từ trước tới nay giới khoa học nhất trí với nhau rằng màu hồng của sao Hỏa được tạo nên khi magnetite (một dạng quặng sắt từ có màu đen) biến thành haematite (một dạng khoáng vật của Fe2O3) do quá trình oxy hóa. Bầu khí quyển sao Hỏa chứa rất nhiều bụi haematite, vì thế mà nó có màu hồng.
