Nằm ở độ cao 8.000 m so với mực nước biển, South Col được xem là một trong những sông băng ít bị tác động nhất bởi biến đổi khí hậu. Tuy nhiên, nghiên cứu mới xuất bản trên tạp chí Khí hậu và Khoa học Khí quyển npj hôm 3/2 đã chỉ ra thực tế gây sốc rằng nó đang mất băng nhanh hơn tới 80 lần so với tốc độ băng tích tụ trên bề mặt.
