Nó cho thấy sao chổi phát sáng xanh rực rỡ và tạo ra một vệt sáng dài trên bầu trời. Màu sắc đặc biệt của Leonard tiết lộ cấu trúc băng đá bên trong nó chứa nhiều cyanide và carbon diatomic.
